Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced $40 million in state aid to promote cycling.
"We are going to integrate the bicycle into the public transport system."
This initiative aligns with his recent slogan about needing fewer Lamborghinis and more public transport. Notably, only 34 Lamborghinis have been sold in Spain since January.
Half of the subsidy will fund the purchase of electric bicycles for individuals and companies, while the other half will improve municipal bike-sharing systems like BiciMad in Madrid and Bicing in Barcelona.
Unlike the Netherlands and Denmark, where 99% and 81% of the population respectively use bicycles, these figures are much lower in Spain. With government investment, the cycling industry could become a promising area for business development.
