Fired for Curiosity: The Cost of a Mistake — 100,000 Euros

An employee of one of the Spanish banks was dismissed for disciplinary reasons after 23 years of service due to a serious breach of confidentiality.

The cause was her uncontrollable curiosity. The woman secretly viewed clients’ accounts — more than 170 people in total, including her relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances. According to reports, she did it “out of pure curiosity” to learn about their financial situation.

When the bank’s management discovered the unauthorized access, it classified the incident as a “very serious violation.” As a result, the employee not only lost her job, which paid 5,000 euros per month, but also her right to receive unemployment benefits.

In addition, she lost her severance compensation, which after 23 years of service could have amounted to around 100,000 euros. Such curiosity constitutes a direct violation of the Data Protection Law, and the dismissal was deemed fully lawful.
