Single National Transport Pass for €60: Exact Launch Date and Retention of Free Tickets

The Spanish government has revealed the final details of the launch of a single national transport pass. The initiative will come into effect on January 19, 2026.

Conditions of the single “bono”:

Price: €60 per month (€30 for young people up to 26 years old).

Where it is valid: Suburban rail services (Cercanías, Rodalies), medium-distance trains (Media Distancia), and state-run intercity buses.

Where it is NOT valid: At this stage, the pass does not cover urban transport (metro, trams, EMT buses) in Madrid, Barcelona, or other major cities, as these systems fall under regional authority.

The government of Pedro Sánchez is proposing that regional authorities sign agreements to integrate urban transport into this system. However, it is still unclear whether the autonomous communities will agree to these terms. If they do not, passengers will continue to carry multiple transport cards, as they do now.

The introduction of the paid single pass does not cancel the currently available free season tickets (abonos gratuitos) for frequent travelers. Throughout 2026, both systems will operate in parallel. Passengers will be able to choose: continue using free tickets on specific routes or purchase the single national pass for unrestricted travel across the country.
