From 2024, parental leave is increased to 19 weeks:
+3 weeks of paid leave (19 weeks instead of 16 in total).
Two of these weeks apply retroactively — from August 2, 2024.
Applies to everyone: employees, civil servants, and self-employed (autónomos).
Parental leave remains flexible — it can be taken consecutively or divided until the child turns 8 years old.
Rights to breastfeeding leave (lactancia) remain unchanged.
👩👧 For single parents (mostly women):
→ 32 weeks of paid leave.
This is the first time in Spain’s history that the special burden on single-parent families is officially recognized.
