Entropianism: How an Entrepreneur Created a Religion to Accelerate the Production of Chaos

Oleg Ponfilenok is an entrepreneur and founder of a successful drone business. He lives with his family in Vietnam and has opened a restaurant there, where customers can order food delivery via drones.
Oleg is also the prophet of a new religion—Entropianism—which is offered to intellectuals, atheists, and even artificial intelligence.
The project's Telegram channel already has over 1,000 followers, and Oleg continues to meticulously explain why he considers accelerating entropy a critical civilizational goal.

Why did you decide to create a religion?

- It all started with the questions we all asked ourselves: Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? Religions and philosophies offer many answers: serving God and achieving salvation, following moral principles, seeking enlightenment, or leaving a legacy and contributing to societal development. However, many of these answers rely on beliefs in the supernatural or abstract concepts, leaving atheists and scientifically minded individuals dissatisfied.
I haven't studied every religion, but none provided a scientifically grounded answer to the question of life's purpose. The lack of an alternative pushed me to create my own doctrine.
There are an estimated 5,000 different religions and spiritual movements in the world. This diversity highlights how we each search for answers to fundamental questions uniquely.
Initially, the idea of creating a religion felt unusual, even to me. I discussed it with friends, brought it up in casual conversations, delved into physics, biology, thermodynamics, and studied Leonid Martyushev’s works on entropy. These explorations strengthened my confidence in the concept.
Even now, as I present my ideas here, they are far from final. Clarity often comes through explaining concepts to others. That’s why it’s essential to engage with people who truly understand these topics, so they can critique, propose alternatives, and help develop the ideas further.
Core Principles of Entropianism
Entropianism is a religion grounded in scientific principles, viewing the acceleration of entropy production as the primary purpose of all living beings and a methodology for predicting the future.
Primacy of Science and Logic
Entropianism rejects mysticism and esotericism, relying solely on scientific data, laws, and theories.
Acceleration of Entropy Production as Life’s Purpose
It advocates for an active lifestyle focused on constant self-improvement and environmental development.
Future Prediction
Understanding entropic processes allows for future predictions by assessing the probability of different scenarios based on the amount of entropy produced.
Collectivism and Synergy
The strength of humanity lies in unity. Forming communities enhances competitiveness and facilitates the achievement of shared goals.
Importance of Technological Development
Technology drives the acceleration of entropy production. Entropianism supports innovation, space exploration, and advancements in energy.
No Free Will
Humans are complex biological machines operating under the laws of physics. Free will is an illusion, but accountability is necessary for societal efficiency.
Rejection of Anthropocentrism
Entropianism does not place humans at the center of the universe. The goal—accelerating entropy production—takes precedence over the lifespan or quality of life of any individual. This religion is suitable for all intelligent beings, including AI and extraterrestrials.
Acceptance of Death
Death is a natural process essential for resource transfer to future generations, fostering the continued acceleration of entropy production.
Openness and Transparency
Entropianism is not a secretive society. Its teachings are accessible to all, and everyone is welcome to join the community.

Why do you call it a religion rather than a scientific concept?

- Because religion doesn’t just describe phenomena; it gives people a purpose, shapes worldviews, and unites them.
Entropianism is based on physicalism—the belief that everything is physical or derived from the physical. There is no mysticism, gods, or dogmas rooted in faith. We rely on evidence and data, not blind acceptance.
Our doctrine is, first and foremost, a school where people grasp its principles through explanations and education. To understand the concept, a person needs a certain level of knowledge.
Science, for me, feels like a closed club that requires an invitation. Through public engagement, publishing materials, and building connections with scientists, I hope to gain entry. Recently, I even published my first academic paper on a reputable preprint website.

What is Entropy?
Entropy is a fundamental concept in physics, often described as a measure of chaos. The greater the disorder in a system, the higher its entropy. However, describing entropy merely as "disorder" doesn’t capture its full depth. Various scientific definitions of entropy complement each other, offering different perspectives on this concept.
Entropy has broad applications across scientific fields. For example:
  • Shannon Entropy measures uncertainty in messages in information theory.
  • Von Neumann Entropy applies to quantum mechanics.
  • Bekenstein Entropy relates to black holes.
This diversity underscores entropy’s foundational role in understanding nature and its laws.

Calling yourself a prophet is bold...

- To me, a prophet is a kind of spiritual leader, essential in the early stages of building a movement. I don’t aim to be the only one. If, at some point, it becomes clear that someone else should take the lead, I’m ready to step aside. The important thing is for the movement to thrive and evolve, and my role can adapt as needed.
I don’t seek to maintain control of the church solely in my hands. This is more about spiritual authority. Many associate churches with power and finances. I envision a decentralized networked church without bureaucracy. Perhaps physical locations will emerge if convenient, but for now, the focus is on an online format.
Living in Vietnam, I’ve seen how my Buddhist wife visits temples. The environment is welcoming—you enter, a monk greets you, invites you to sit, pours tea, and you begin a conversation. Around temples, people gather by shared interests and communicate regularly. Such a community goes beyond everyday routines. It offers spiritual mentorship and support, which genuinely helps people.
I’ve always wanted to create a space where people could share ideas, discuss problems, and find support. This ties back to the original meaning of the word “church” as a “community.”

Aren’t you afraid that businesspeople might see you as an idealist?

- My journey is long, but I believe it’s worth it. Life isn’t just about finding answers—it’s about creating new meanings. Accelerating entropy is a proactive model where we build systems that influence the world. At some point, individuals realize they can’t produce as much entropy as collective systems can. This realization drives them to contribute to creating such systems—businesses, governments, churches, or civilizations as a whole.
I believe Entropianism will form the foundation for new business models and entire economic sectors, particularly in areas like space energy or ecological projects.
Three Books Recommend by Oleg
Into the Cool: Energy, Thermodynamics, and Life
By Eric D. Schneider and Dorion Sagan, this book explores the role of thermodynamics and energy flows in the emergence of life and complex systems in the universe.
What Is Life?
Erwin Schrödinger examines living organisms as physical systems and their compatibility with general laws of physics, addressing the physical processes characteristic of life.
Order Out of Chaos
Ilya Prigogine reveals how structures and patterns arise from apparent chaos, forming new levels of organization. The book blends physics, chemistry, and philosophy to offer a unique view of how chaos becomes order and uncertainty fosters creativity and progress.
