Airbnb.org launches free medical stays program for patients in Spain
The non-profit organization Airbnb.org, in collaboration with six Spanish NGOs, has officially launched the Medical Stays program. This initiative provides free temporary housing for vulnerable patients and their families who are forced to travel to other regions of Spain to receive specialized medical treatment.
Statistics show that over 8 million medical-related overnight stays occur annually in Spain. Furthermore, 72% of these trips exceed a distance of 200 kilometers, making it impossible to return home daily. Accommodation costs in these situations account for up to 38% of the total medical trip budget, creating a significant financial burden on families.
The program is being implemented with the support of specialized non-profit organizations such as Fundación Aladina, Mensajeros de la Paz, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Providing comfortable accommodation in close proximity to hospitals will allow relatives to focus entirely on patient care, relieving them of additional economic and emotional stress during a critical time.
