ECB Announces Design Competition for Future Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched an international competition to design the future euro banknotes. Professional graphic designers from all EU countries are invited to participate. Applications will be accepted until August 18.

Themes of the future banknotes:

• "European Culture" – focusing on Europe’s cultural heritage and prominent figures.
• "Rivers and Birds" – highlighting Europe’s biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

After the competition, the people of Europe will vote for the best design, and the final decision will be made by the ECB Governing Council by the end of 2026. The new banknotes will be issued a few years later, after approval and printing.
