Spain ranked second in the EU for business tax increases over the past 10 years.
According to a new report by the IEE and the Tax Foundation, Spain ranks second in the EU for the fastest growth in business tax burden over the past decade. From 2013 to 2023, it increased by 2.3 percentage points of GDP, second only to the Netherlands.
🔍 Key facts:
48.8% of all taxes in Spain are paid by businesses (compared to 39.4% in the EU).
Corporate taxes account for 17.8% of GDP — 3 percentage points higher than the EU average.
Profit pressure: 41.6% of business income goes to taxes (compared to 31% in the OECD).
💬 Experts note that businesses in Spain bear not only a direct tax burden, but also significant costs for tax administration and collection on behalf of the state — the total burden reaches 115% of the actual tax amount.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are particularly affected: administrative costs alone consume up to 29% of their total tax payments.
