Spanish Government Makes Concessions: Social Security Contributions for Low-Income Autónomos to Be Frozen in 2026

The Ministry of Social Security (Seguridad Social) has adjusted its position regarding the contributions of self-employed workers (autónomos) for 2026. Following sharp criticism from professional associations, the government has proposed a new plan that cancels the previously planned general increase in contribution rates.

The key change is the freeze of monthly contributions for autónomos with the lowest incomes. The proposal affects the first three income segments (up to €900 net per month). For them, the contribution amount in 2026 will remain at the 2025 level.

However, associations of self-employed workers and industry media reacted critically to the news. They argue that this is only a temporary postponement, not a cancellation of the increase. According to this view, the “freeze” is a “mirage,” since the postponed rise in 2026 will likely have to be offset by sharper increases in the following years to keep the reform on schedule through 2032.

For self-employed workers with middle-income levels (segments 4–11), concessions have also been proposed. Their contributions will still rise, but below the inflation rate (IPC). Meanwhile, for autónomos with higher incomes, contributions will increase — the government proposes to raise the maximum contribution base by 2.5%.
