Unemployed Individuals Are Exempt from the Obligation to File a Tax Return

The Spanish government has officially abolished the requirement that obliged recipients of unemployment benefits to file an annual income tax return (Renta).

This decision reverses a rule introduced by the 2024 reform. The authorities acknowledged that the requirement imposed an “unnecessary administrative burden” on citizens and amounted to a purely formal procedure with no practical purpose.

❗️ The exemption applies exclusively to unemployment benefits. For recipients of the Minimum Living Income (Ingreso Mínimo Vital — IMV), the obligation to file a tax return remains fully in force, as this benefit is governed by different regulations.
