A New Blow to the Self-Employed in Spain: Government Proposes Sharp Increase in Contributions from 2026!
The Ministry of Social Protection has presented a proposal under which self-employed workers’ social security contributions will increase by between €208 and €2,474 annually over the period 2026–2031.
For those currently paying the minimum contribution, the monthly amount would rise to €217 (from €200 today), and by 2028 it would reach €252. For those with higher incomes, the increase would be even greater.
This is part of a reform linking contributions to actual income, which will be fully implemented by 2032. Associations representing the self-employed have strongly criticized the measure and vowed to fight it, arguing that the government “lives in a bubble.”
